Warriors boys squad captures regional title

Jacob Dumford and Kent Ford finished first and second, respectively, to carry the Westerville North High School boys cross country team to a Division I regional championship Oct. 27 at Pickerington North.

Dumford, a senior, won in 15 minutes, 51.81 seconds and classmate Ford was second in 15:51.95 to pace the Warriors to 79 points, nine ahead of runner-up Hilliard Davidson, and a berth in the state meet Saturday, Nov. 3, at National Trail Raceway. Olentangy Liberty (108) and New Albany (114) also qualified as the top four teams and top 16 individuals advanced.

Dumford (15:15.27) and Ford (15:21.06) also took the top two spots in the OCC-Cardinal Division meet Oct. 13, and Ford edged Dumford (16:55.71 to 16:55.98) to win the district 1 meet Oct. 20 at Watkins Memorial.

Also for North, senior Nicholas Chatel was 15th (16:12.92), followed by freshman Matt Parkhurst (30th, 16:51.24), senior Seth Wenrich (39th, 17:00.08), junior Nick Horton (56th, 17:15.66) and senior Phillip Horn (68th, 17:24.55).

North's boys will be joined at state by Heather and Haley Sandvik of the school's girls team. The sophomore sisters were second (18:51.73) and 16th (19:24.64), respectively, at regional.

The Warriors girls were sixth with 196 points, two spots shy of a state berth, as Davidson (50), Upper Arlington (113), Dublin Coffman (115) and Dublin Scioto (129) advanced. Also running for North were senior Heidi Engelhardt (40th, 20:21.56), sophomores Jocelyn Sharpe (69th, 21:03.43) and Mary Swatzell (90th, 21:29.18), senior Sarah Koch (94th, 21:33.89) and sophomore Anna Kocak (109th, 22:00.91).

The individual runners for Central and South did not advance to state.

Central junior Dana Roberts was 45th (20:23.84) in the girls regional and South sophomore Greg Smith was 111th (18:13.28) in the boys regional.
