Warhawks seek finish in top half of league

The Westerville Central High School girls tennis team entered the week with a chance to finish in the upper half of the OCC-Cardinal Division.

The Warhawks were 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the league entering a home match against Westerville North on Sept. 10. Central visits Westerville South in the league finale for both teams on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The Warhawks have been led by freshman Nicole Cardwell, who was 8-1 at first singles through nine matches. Freshman Alexandria Shaw and senior Autumn Ramsey both were 6-3 at second singles and third singles, respectively.

Entering the week, defending OCC-Cardinal champion Dublin Jerome and Dublin Scioto both were 5-0 in league play. Central, which lost to Jerome 5-0 on Sept. 5, and Hilliard Darby both were 3-2, followed by Canal Winchester (2-3), South (1-4), Hilliard Bradley (1-4) and North (0-5).

South earned its first league victory Sept. 5 by beating host North 5-0 and was 3-7 overall before playing Darby on Sept. 10.

The Wildcats have been led by senior Tara Thompson, who was 5-4 at first singles entering the week, and seniors McKenna Davis and Lexi Hunkler, who were 5-4 at first doubles through 10 matches.

North, which has its league finale Thursday, Sept. 12, at home against Bradley, entered the week 0-5 overall.
