South boys aiming for titles in COHSBC, OCC

By

Having lost just one competitor from last year to graduation, Westerville South High School bowling coach Jamie West knew his boys team had potential this season.

The Wildcats are out to a good start at 4-1 in the Central Ohio High School Bowling Conference-North Division.

"Most of the kids are returning from last year," West said. "We had a pretty successful year last year, so I don't see why we can't be good again this year."

The only bowler lost to graduation was Zach Pannell, who helped the Wildcats finish 14-2 overall last season and tie Jonathan Alder for first in the COHSBC-North at 12-2.

South was third in the OCC-Cardinal last season at 3-2. Westerville Central and Westerville North tied for first at 4-1.

South is 2-0 in the OCC-Cardinal this season, behind Central (3-0).

"You like to win the OCC because it's the official conference, but there's more teams in the (COHSBC), so winning that you're going through the gauntlet as opposed to winning five matches," West said. "If you take care of business, they both work out."

The Wildcats opened by defeating North 2,341-1,600 on Dec. 3. Senior Adam Henson had a 504 series and sophomore James Price had a 499.

South defeated Thomas Worthington 2,381-1,758 on Dec. 5 as senior Ian Strapp had a 458 series, and Henson had a 438 series in a 2,307-1,592 win over Big Walnut on Dec. 10.

South defeated Hilliard Darby 2,470-1,800 on Dec. 12 as Strapp had a 470 series.

The Wildcats lost to Olentangy Liberty 2,307-2,172 on Dec. 17.

"We're bowling pretty well so far," West said.

Other bowlers are seniors D-Andre Curenton and John Levakis and sophomores Mikhael Barr and James Price.

The South girls team opened 4-0 in the COHSBC-North, tied for first with Central and Olentangy. The Wildcats are tied for first in the OCC-Cardinal with Delaware at 2-0.

South defeated North 1,748-1,588 as senior Mahaya Porter had a 309 series, and senior Hannah Gotschall had a 395 series in a 1,838-1,124 win over Big Walnut.

The Wildcats defeated Darby 1,978-1,304 as Porter had a 381 and senior Maranda Reed recorded a 351.

Sophomore Sydney Van Scyoc had a 363 series in a 1,842-1,597 win over Liberty.

Other bowlers are juniors Marissa Barthel, Rachel Ellis, Charley Goodwin and Sarah Walters and sophomore Kirsten Doty.

Last season, South finished third (10-2) in the COHSBC-North behind champion Central (12-0) and fourth (3-2) in the OCC-Cardinal behind champion Central (5-0).

Central teams start strong

Central coach Julie Wells expects her boys team to improve on last season's 8-8 overall record.

The Warhawks are 7-0 overall, 6-0 in the COHSBC-North and 3-0 in the OCC-Cardinal.

"It's just good old-fashioned hard work" Wells said of her program's continued success. "We look at the youth leagues, but a lot of the students -- especially on the girls end -- they just decide to try out and then we build them from the ground up."

The boys defeated Thomas 2,155-1,266 on Dec. 2 as senior Michael Spiers had a 394 series. The Warhawks defeated Liberty 2,265-2,045 on Dec. 5 as Spiers had a 412 series and junior Marcus Gonce had a 402.

Senior Austin Bleiweiss had a 478 series in a 2,215-1,550 win over North on Dec. 11, and junior Conor Starkey had a 440 series in a 2,343-1,728 win over Big Walnut on Dec. 13.

Gonce had a 525 in a 2,291-2,200 win over Hilliard Davidson on Dec. 16, and Bleiweiss had a 426 in a 2,129-2,023 win over Delaware on Dec. 18.

The Warhawks defeated Worthington Christian 2,307-2,038 on Dec. 20 as junior Tim O'Donnell had a 420 series.

Other bowlers are senior Corey Walls and freshman Ben Lorenz.

"I have the luxury of having choices with the boys," Wells said. "They will do a lot better this year."

The girls team is 4-1 overall, 4-0 in the COHSBC-North and 2-1 in the OCC-Cardinal.

The Warhawks defeated Liberty 1,787-1,610 as junior Savannah Slark had a 370 series and beat North 1,757-1,597 as Slark had a 358.

Slark had a 408 in a 1,950-1,431 win over Big Walnut and a 387 in a 1,717-1,199 win over Davidson.

Central lost to Delaware 1,728-1,725. Junior Kelly Scarborough had a 361 series.

"We need somebody to beat Delaware," Wells said. "I expected a close match and it came right down to the wire."

Other bowlers are seniors Katelynn Rygg, Gina Scarborough and Maranda Tatman, juniors Amma Ayarkwa, Kelly Conkel, Nicole Guilbault and Mia Johnson and sophomores Danah Hussein and Ange Leone.

Last season, Slark competed in the state tournament, finishing 24th (533) of 103 competitors. She finished first of 118 competitors in the district tournament with a 625.

Joseph leading North girls team

The North girls team is 2-2 in the COHSBC-North and 0-2 in the OCC-Cardinal.

The Warriors opened by losing to South 1,748-1,588 on Dec. 3 as freshman Kaylee Joseph had a 330 series.

The Warriors defeated Olentangy Orange 1,401-1,349 on Dec. 9 as Joseph had a 317 and lost to Central 1,757-1,597 on Dec. 11 as Joseph had a 385.

Joseph had a 406 series in a 1,595-1,512 win over Hilliard Bradley on Dec. 16 and is averaging 179.8 per game.

"I'm not surprised," coach Dean Dabe said of Joseph's early success. "I've known her for a couple of years. She does a lot of youth bowling. She bowls in traveling leagues. She also does a lot of competitions."

Other bowlers are junior Myriah Child and sophomores Katelyn Couch, Alivia Garee, Emily Moore and Kayleigh Smith.

The boys team is 0-4 in the COHSBC-North and 0-2 in the OCC-Cardinal.

North lost to South 2,351-1,600 as senior Nickolas Pannell had a 324 series.

Pannell had a 337 in a 2,211-1,572 loss to Orange, and the Warriors lost to Central 2,215-1,570 as Pannell had a 383.

North lost to Bradley 1,982-1,755 as junior Dylan Henthorne had a 345 series.

Other bowlers are seniors Ian Lybarger and Collin Meyer, junior Alex Mondlak, sophomore Matthew Gerardi and freshman Andrew Sturgell.

"Every coach wants to win every game, but under the circumstances and the situation, I'm happy with what they're doing," Dabe said of the boys and girls teams. "You have the close ones that you lose and kind of get under your skin a little bit, but they're kids. Let's go out and have a good time and go from there."
