Warriors capture title with unbeaten record


The Westerville North High School wrestling team secured the outright OCC-Cardinal Division title with a 64-12 win over visiting Dublin Scioto on Feb. 6.

It's the Warriors' first league title since 1991.

North went 7-0 in the league to finish ahead of Hilliard Bradley (6-1), Hilliard Darby (5-2), Dublin Jerome (4-3), Westerville Central (3-4), Westerville South (2-5), Scioto (1-6) and Canal Winchester (0-7).

Against Scioto, winners by pin for the Warriors' were Santino DiSabato at 120 pounds (1 minute, 6 seconds), Nick Durieux at 138 (26 seconds), Brandon Goldsmith at 145 (48 seconds), Hunter Sintobin at 152 (1:14) and Jakob Hinz at 170 (32 seconds).

Josh Grant won by forfeit at 126. His father, Chris, was a senior captain on the 1991 team and is an assistant coach in the program.

The Warriors compete in a Division I sectional Saturday, Feb. 15, at Upper Arlington. Other teams will be Briggs, Bradley, Columbus West, Grove City, Hilliard Davidson, New Albany, Olentangy Orange, Thomas Worthington, UA and Whetstone.

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the district tournament Feb. 21 and 22 at Darby.

Central defeats South in league finale

Central closed its league schedule by defeating South 45-36 on Feb. 6 at home.

Winners by pin for the Warhawks were Tre Bogetich at 113 (4:46), John Fitzgibbon at 132 (5:39) and Will Green at 145 (2:37).

Bogetich, a freshman, is 31-12 overall. Green, a sophomore, is 20-6.

Central also won four matches against South by forfeit.

After finishing 0-8 overall and 0-7 in the OCC-Cardinal last season, the Warhawks improved to 12-12 overall and 3-4 in the league.

Central competes in a Division I sectional Saturday, Feb. 15, at Marysville. Other teams will be Central Crossing, Darby, Groveport, Hamilton Township, Jerome, Marysville, Northland, Olentangy, Olentangy Liberty and Worthington Kilbourne.

South's Llaneza remains undefeated

South's Caleb Llaneza improved to 34-0 overall when he pinned Central's Luis Cardoso in 2:25 in a 152-pound match Feb. 6.

Other winners by pin for the Wildcats were Ray Gordon at 120 (5:38), Evan Trainer at 160 (5:29), Andrew Wilush at 182 (2:20) and Zach Wachalec at 220 (1:19).

The Wildcats compete in a Division I sectional Saturday, Feb. 15, at Pickerington Central with the host Tigers, Dublin Coffman, Franklin Heights, Gahanna, Logan, Mount Vernon, Newark, Teays Valley, Walnut Ridge and Westland.
