Gibbs leads North past Jerome to open tournament

Anna Gibbs scored 23 points with five 3-pointers to lead the host Westerville North High School girls basketball team to a 58-47 victory over 30th-seeded Dublin Jerome on Feb. 17 in the first round of the Division I district tournament.

Symone Simmons had 12 points and Hannah Ferguson added 11 for North, which improved to 18-5.

Seventh-seeded North plays at home Thursday, Feb. 20, against 35th-seeded Independence in the second round. The 76ers are 10-11 and did not play the Warriors this season.

The winner plays in a district semifinal against 14th-seeded Pickerington North or 43rd-seeded Dublin Scioto on Feb. 27 at Jonathan Alder.

The Warriors also defeated Jerome 51-47 on Jan. 29 and 68-31 on Feb. 11 in their regular-season and OCC-Cardinal Division finale. Simmons scored 20 points and Ronni Royer added 14 with four 3-pointers in the second meeting.

North won the OCC-Cardinal at 13-1, followed by Hilliard Bradley (11-3), Westerville South (9-5), Jerome (8-6), Westerville Central (8-6), Canal Winchester (5-9), Scioto (2-12) and Hilliard Darby (0-14).

Wildcats set for district opener

South opens the Division I district tournament with a second-round game Thursday, Feb. 20, at 12th-seeded Bradley.

The 17th-seeded Wildcats are 14-8 and had a first-round bye.

Bradley, which is 17-6, defeated the Wildcats twice in OCC-Cardinal play, 53-36 on Dec. 13 and 41-29 on Jan. 24.

The winner plays 11th-seeded Gahanna, 23rd-seeded Walnut Ridge or 25th-seeded Central in a district semifinal Feb. 27 at Bloom-Carroll.

Chanelle Moore averages team highs 18.3 points and 10.1 rebounds for South. Jada Smoot leads the Wildcats with 4.1 assists per contest and has made 39 of 52 free throws (75 percent).

Warhawks fall to Wolves in tune-up

Central was 10-12 and had a first-round bye before playing Gahanna on Feb. 19 in the second round of the Division I district tournament.

The winner advanced to play Bradley or South in a district semifinal Feb. 27 at Bloom-Carroll.

The Warhawks finished the regular season with a 49-45 loss to Worthington Kilbourne on Feb. 11. Andrea Hodge had 14 points and Morghan Hyatt added 10.
