South wraps up first outright league title


The Westerville South High School boys tennis team secured its first outright OCC title by defeating Hilliard Bradley 4-1 on April 30 at Olympic Indoor Tennis Club.

The match was moved indoors because of threatening weather.

South won the OCC-Cardinal Division championship at 6-0, ahead of Dublin Scioto (5-1), Dublin Jerome (4-2), Hilliard Darby (3-3), Westerville North (1-5), Westerville Central (1-5) and Bradley (1-5).

"I'm proud of the kids," coach John Fill said. "They have put a lot of time in and they've worked hard. I give them all the credit. I'm real pleased."

Winning against Bradley were Jacob Kotik 6-0, 6-1 at second singles, Cody Rannebarger 6-2, 6-0 at third singles, Spencer Clark and Ben Potts 6-2, 6-2 at first doubles and Grant Augenstein and Ian Liao 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles.

It also was the first time that South defeated Jerome and Scioto in the same season, Fill said.

The Wildcats defeated Scioto 3-2 on April 17 and Jerome 3-2 on April 10, both at home.

South improved to 12-1 overall by defeating Thomas Worthington 4-1 on May 5. Winners were David Hayman 6-0, 6-0 at first singles, Kotik 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, Clark and Potts 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles and Liao and Rannebarger 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles.

The Wildcats lost to Wellington 3-2 on April 29.

South will compete in the OCC first-place tournament Saturday, May 10, against host Upper Arlington (OCC-Central), Pickerington North (OCC-Ohio) and New Albany (OCC-Capital).

The tournament was postponed May 3 because not all league matches had been completed.

North earns win over Whetstone

North defeated Whetstone 3-2 on May 1 for its second win this season against the Braves.

Winners were Jimmy Evans 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, Vidit Singhal and Sean Stacho 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 at first doubles and Jacob Horton and MgGlenn Etienne 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at second doubles.

The Warriors are 5-7 overall. They also defeated Whetstone 5-0 on April 11.

Central picks up two victories

Central defeated Newark 4-1 on May 1 and Watkins Memorial 4-1 on April 29.

The Warhawks were 6-8 overall before playing Worthington Christian on May 6.

Against Newark, winners were Jimmy D'Amico 6-0, 6-1 at second singles, Ana Borish 6-3, 6-3 at third singles, Tanner Bush and Bobby Weiler 6-0, 6-1 at first doubles and Conor Davis and Max Ramsey 6-1, 6-3 at second doubles.

Against Watkins Memorial, winners were Mitchell McClain 6-4, 6-1 at first singles, D'Amico 6-3, 6-4 at second singles, Borish 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at third singles and Bush and Weiler 6-1, 6-1 at first doubles.

The Warhawks lost to DeSales 3-2 on April 30. Winners were Borish 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 at third singles and Davis and Ramsey 7-6, 6-2 at second doubles.
