The Westerville club hockey team will look to lock up third place in the Greater Columbus High School Club Hockey League and a berth in the state tournament when it plays Athens on Friday, Feb. 12, at Chiller North.

The Warcats are 20-14-4 overall and 12-8-3 in the seven-team GCHSCHL with 27 points and can vault ahead of Northeast (28 points, 13-9-2) into third place with a win.

The top three teams earn automatic berths to the state tournament.

Northeast has completed its league schedule.

"We're very happy with how we're doing so far," coach Brian Thompson said. "If we win Friday we clinch third place in the regular season, which gives us a berth in the state tournament, so that's obviously big for us. One of the goals that we had at the beginning of the year was to make that tournament and make some noise in the league tournament."

Newark is first (36, 17-3-2) in the league, followed by Dayton (34, 16-4-2).

The league tournament, known as the Blue Jackets Cup, will be held Feb. 18-21. The regular-season champion earns a first-round bye in the double-elimination event.

The 12-team state tournament, the Buckeye Cup, will be held March 4-6.

The Warcats are 2-2-2 over their last six games.

Westerville defeated PHA 7-2 on Jan. 31 at the Fairgrounds Coliseum and Hilliard 5-2 on Jan. 30 at Chiller North.

Grant Dickinson had three goals against PHA. He has a team-high 37 goals and 15 assists on the season.

Luke Ewing had two goals against Hilliard. He has six goals and 14 assists overall.

Nick Orioli has 21 goals and 17 assists, Victor Runyon has 11 goals and 10 assists and Evan Garber has eight goals and 12 assists.

Goaltender Sean Coonfare is 17-9-4 with a 3.1 goals-against average and an .882 save percentage.

Thompson said the return of junior forward Evan Ingram, who missed action with a broken leg, has been a key to the team's recent success. He has five goals and seven assists.
