Columbus police are investigating the city's third homicide of the year that occurred Jan. 15 just south of the Whitehall city limits in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant on East Livingston Avenue.
A 22-year-old man was fatally shot, and a 26-year-old man was injured in a shooting reported at about 4:15 p.m. Jan. 15 in the parking lot of Wendy's, 4049 E. Livingston Ave.
Columbus medics pronounced Kevin D. Hughlett, 22, dead at the scene.
David Hawkins, 26, was transported to Grant Medical Center and admitted in critical condition but is expected to survive, police said.
Hughlett was shot multiple times, Columbus Sgt. Christ Holzhauser said, and was in the driver's seat of his vehicle. Hawkins was in the passenger seat, he said.
The shooter apparently fired shots through the driver's-side window, police said.
No motive immediately was determined.
"There are witnesses to interview," but police have yet to speak with Hawkins, Holzhauser said.
According to court records, Hughlett was arrested in 2009 for aggravated robbery and was released from prison in June after serving a portion of a four-year sentence for an aggravated-robbery conviction.
