An open house celebrating the 90th birthday of Bob Martin, who helped start Whitehall's fire and police departments, is set for 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at the Groveport Community Center, 457 Madison Lane, Groveport.
Martin, who served as one of the original volunteer firemen until the department went to paid firefighters, also helped to form the WBBA and WCCA organizations. He also was among the first group of members of the Whitehall Masonic Lodge and was a past grand marshal of the Whitehall Fourth of July parade. He is the only living person among the members of the Walk of Fame at John Bishop Park.
Martin owned Martin Trucking Co. and was a school bus driver for Whitehall for 25 years. He retired from Penn Central Railroad with 47 years of service.
Married to his late wife "Peaches" for 57 years, Martin is the father of five.
