Members of the Whitehall Charter Review Commission were scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, to begin the arduous required process of reviewing the city charter.
Charter commission members held an organizational meeting April 17 and named Ken Abshire as the chairman of the five-member panel.
The five members of the commission are Abshire, Naja Bailey, Scott Cavanaugh, Mark Elam and Amalee Soteriades.
Bailey is the spouse of City Councilman Robert Bailey. Soteriades is the widow of James Soteriades, who was a fire inspector and councilman for Whitehall. Mrs. Soteriades was a member of the committee in 2008.
Ken Euman and Denise Roberge serve as alternate members of the commission.
The commission on May 1 was expected to adopt a schedule of meeting dates. Although the schedule isn't finalized, meetings likely will be held at 6:30 p.m. on alternating Wednesdays, Soteriades said.
The meetings are open to the public.
Soteriades has suggested June 30 as a tentative date to conclude the review and make a recommendation to City Council.
The Whitehall charter mandates that a review commission be convened every five years to review the charter and make possible recommendations for amendments.
If any recommended amendments are made, City Council reserves the right to accept any, all or none of the recommendations of the commission.
Those amendments that City Council accepts are placed on the ballot for the electorate to consider.
Whitehall voters must approve any amendment to the city charter.
