Longtime superintendent, veteran Johnson dies

Former Whitehall City School District Superintendent Gilbert Adrian Johnson died March 2 at the age of 89.

Born in Somerton, Johnson graduated from Barnesville High School and received a bachelor's degree from Ohio University and a master's degree from Ohio State University.

He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.

Johnson was a teacher, coach and administrator in Hebron, Utica, Lebanon, Alexandria and Pataskala.

He ended his career in education as the superintendent of Whitehall City Schools, serving from 1966 until his retirement in 1981.

He also served as assistant superintendent in the district for seven years.

"He was very well-liked and respected in the community," said current Superintendent Brian Hamler.

"Mr. Johnson will be sadly missed."
