Sunday service set to honor slain officer

The Whitehall Division of Police will host a public memorial service for slain Whitehall officer Terry McDowell at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at Little Flower and Saint Francis lanes, where residents of Norton Field erected a memorial to him.

McDowell was fatally shot and his partner, Eric Brill, was blinded in one eye by Bela Mozer, who opened fire Aug. 24, 2001, from inside his Beechbank Road residence where the officers had been sent to issue a summons to the man's wife. Mozer fatally shot himself in the head several minutes later.

A motorcycle ride is scheduled from Rooster's, 376 S. Hamilton Road, to the memorial site.

McDowell's window, Angela, founded Get Behind the Badge, a nonprofit organization that provides support for families of slain and critically injured law enforcement officers in central Ohio.

A memorial has been held at the site each year since McDowell's death.
