The recent spike in gas prices has forced many commuters to look for cost-saving alternatives to their workday drive. For some, this has meant car pooling. For others, it means acquainting themselves with public transit. But for a good number of intrepid commuters, the answer has been the humble motorscooter.

Scooter sales have been climbing in 2008 and, not surprisingly, dealers are popping up all over Columbus to meet the demand. Kickstart Scooters, Zoot Scoots, Motohio and the Speed Factory are just a few of the businesses supporting the recent scooter boom. And while these dealers serve a great purpose, the idea of scooter shopping can be a little intimidating for some people, especially when they have so many questions.

That's where Worthington Libraries comes in. We recognize the growing interest in scooters and the need for people to get good information about them. For that reason, we're offering "Buying a Scooter: What You Need to Know," a special program designed for people considering a scooter but looking to learn a little bit more before they buy.

The program will begin with a scooter overview provided by a long-time scooterist. The session will focus on what types of scooters are available and what to look for when choosing one. We'll also spend time addressing basic laws, licensing and insurance issues that come up when purchasing a scooter.

Additionally, we've arranged for two local scooter dealers as well as owners and seasoned riders to be on hand to answer questions and talk about their bikes. Representatives of Zoot Scoots and Kickstart Scooters will have scooters available to examine and local scooterists will attend to share their central Ohio experiences.

If you've been thinking about buying a scooter, but weren't sure where to start, make time for this event. It's a great chance to "kick the tires" and learn before you buy.
