Egan-Ryan Funeral Services will celebrate its 150th anniversary this year with the opening of a new facility on the Northwest Side.

The locally owned business will hold an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at its new 7,000-square-foot location at 4653 Kenny Road. The projected size was 9,050 square feet, but the company decided not to build a basement.

Columbus City Council signed off on a rezoning to allow for the construction of the one-story building.

Company president Bob Ryan said the new facility meets the needs of families who recently lost a loved one.

"It's beautifully decorated, completely accessible and very practical," Ryan said. "It has all the latest technology for video playing, recording of funerals."

This May marks Egan-Ryan's sesquicentennial. Its original location was on West Naghten Street in downtown Columbus. It moved to its current location, 403 E. Broad St., in 1929. Since then, the family opened a second funeral home at 4019 E. Livingston Ave.

Ryan said he believes the company's professionalism speaks volumes about its longevity. He said he's proud to continue the family-owned heritage. In fact, his son, Kevin Ryan, recently joined the business.

"We like to refer to ourselves as growing tradition," Bob Ryan said. "We've been dealing with a lot of the same families for five generations. They come to us because they know they're going to get excellent service and be treated fairly."
