The Capital Area Humane Society will host the third annual "Defend Your Friend 5K Run/1K Fun Walk" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Homestead Park, 4675 Cosgray Road in Hilliard.

The Capital Area Humane Society will host the third annual "Defend Your Friend 5K Run/1K Fun Walk" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at Homestead Park, 4675 Cosgray Road in Hilliard.

Registration begins at 6 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the CAHS Animal Cruelty Investigations program.

All runners, walkers and friendly dogs are welcome to attend. The entry fee is $20 per person for CAHS members. The non-member fee is $25, and each dog entered in the race is $5.

The first 250 registrants and 50 dogs will receive an event T-shirt or bandana. Prizes will be awarded immediately following the race.

Participants may also create teams and use an online fundraising page to raise money.

Dress for Success Columbus will host its first annual "Cocktails for a Cause" gala from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at COSI Columbus, 333 W. Broad St.

The event will raise awareness for Dress for Success and its mission to help central Ohio women on their paths to self-sufficiency.

The evening will feature a Speakeasy atmosphere, a Charleston dance performance by Nomel Dance Theatre, a fashion show presented by local boutiques, silent auction with works by local artists and live music by local jazz band Gruvment.

Hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. Festive cocktail attire is encouraged.
