The Sharon Township Police Department may move into the old Broadview Mortgage building at 95 E. Wilson Bridge Road.

The township trustees are considering the purchase of the building to house the police and township offices.

Trustees want public input before they move ahead with the purchase, said trustee John Oberle. Public testimony will be encouraged during regular trustee meetings on Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. and Sept. 16 at 6 p.m.

Oberle hopes to hold the meetings in the East Wilson Bridge building so that residents can get a good look at the property.

The police and other township services moved into office space at 7760 Olentangy River Road last April after being located in the old Veteran's Memorial building, 137 E. Granville Road, for 33 years.

Trustees were forced to find a new home in a short time after being evicted by the Sharon Memorial Board. The two bodies could not come to terms over rent, utilities and how the building was being used.

Trustees always believed that owning their own building would be wise, but did not want to be rushed into a decision to buy, Oberle said.

The new headquarters is working out okay, but since it is a lease, there is no guarantee about the future, he said.

The Wilson Bridge building would offer plenty of space, a central location, and permanence, all at a good price, Oberle said.

The working price is $800,000 for a building that, in better economic times, could sell for $1-million, he said.

"Because of the market, it is a perfect time to buy," he said.
