Union County chief deputy sheriff Tom Morgan will take over as interim Union County sheriff effective April 3.

Commissioner Gary Lee said commissioners voted this morning (March 31) to appoint Morgan.

"I think the commissioners had two very strong reasons to appoint Tom: One is his extraordinary record as chief deputy and his amazing administrative skills," Lee said. "Tom has also announced that he will not be a candidate for the sheriff's position, so that won't bring any bias for or against the commissioners' appointment into the process."

Morgan will replace exiting sheriff Rocky Nelson until the Republican Central Committee selects someone to fill the remainder of Nelson's term. The committee is expected to make that decision April 30.
