Beans, grains, coffee on market menu
Add black turtle beans, coffee, and a new cookie or two to your farmers market shopping list.
Those are just a few of the new items at the winter indoor market, which opened for its regular season on Jan. 7.
The market is open the Saturdays immediately prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas, but now it will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday through April at the Griswold Center.
One of the most unusual new vendors is Shagbark Seed & Mill Co., which processes beans and grain, seed, and flour for consumers.
Top sellers at the first market were the beans, grains, flour, crackers, chips, and heirloom popcorn.
The corn and beans are grown locally, in partnership with Shagbark. The company provides the seed and know-how to farmers new to the high-nutrition crops that are well adapted to the Midwest.
Also new is the coffee brewing for samples just inside the door to the market. SilverBridge Coffee from Gallipolis provides new batches of the roasted coffee each week.
Cookies are not new, but Clintonville home baker Shugs Bakers has just begun selling at the market. The butterscotch pecan sold out quickly, and the chocolate mint cookies were not far behind.
In all, there are 23 vendors. Some do not come each week.
Items for sale include fudge, blueberries, pies, pork, bread, pastries, relishes, apples, cider, garlic, turnips, honey, vegetables, eggs, honey, beef, cheese, pasta, sauces, maple products, squash, almond butter, kombucha, chicken, teas, jams and jellies, beef.
The Speckled Hen food truck serves fresh egg sandwiches and other hot dishes in the parking lot.
