U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Columbus) has nominated 18 high school students to attend the service academies, including one who attends Worthington Kilbourne.

U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Columbus) has nominated 18 high school students to attend the service academies, including one who attends Worthington Kilbourne.

Wasim Soomro was nominated to the United States Air Force Academy. Wasim, the son of Abdul and Suraya Soomro of Columbus. is a senior at Worthington Kilbourne High School. He has distinguished himself through his academic excellence and extensive involvement in extracurricular activities including National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, varsity soccer, wrestling, and volleyball.

He served as vice president of his chapter of National Honor Society and was a captain on his school's soccer team.

"I admire the dedication these students are demonstrating in volunteering for service in the U.S. military academies," said Stivers in a statement. "As a service member, I am aware of the demands and challenges they will face in pursuing a career as a military officer"

In pursuit of this nomination, Soomro submitted an application and was interviewed by Congressman Stivers' Military Academy Review Board. The board evaluated all finalist candidates on the basis of academic performance, leadership ability, and community involvement

"A nomination to the any of the military academies is a great honor," said Stivers. "I know that, if admitted, these students will work hard every day to make the citizens of Ohio's 15th Congressional District and our country proud."

In addition to Soomro, the other nominees are from the following communities: Hilliard, Dublin, Marysville, Columbus, Galloway and Upper Arlington.

To receive a service academy nomination from Congressman Stivers, candidates must be unmarried residents of Ohio's 15th Congressional District, a United States citizen, and between the ages of 17 and 23.
