Just in time to boost New Year's resolutions, the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce and the Shops at Worthington Place invite the community to the second annual Healthy New Year, Worthington! event, a public health and fitness expo that will ring in 2014 on a healthy note.
The event will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at the Shops at Worthington Place, 7227 N. High St., where approximately 50 local health- and fitness-related companies are expected to present exhibits, giveaways, demonstrations and health screenings.
Highlighting the health assessments, OhioHealth, the presenting event sponsor, will offer prescheduled mobile mammography and bone-density tests and will provide free biometric screenings to monitor several key health indicators.
Women who are interested in the mammograms and bone- density tests should preregister with OhioHealth's central scheduling office at 614-566-1111 and specify the Shops at Worthington location and date, along with their health insurance information.
No appointments are necessary for the biometric screenings or health education displays.
In addition to the presenting and host sponsors, Anthem BlueCross BlueShield and Rite for You Corporate Wellness are corporate sponsors of the event.
Attendees at the event will be able to "shop" for strategies and information that will promote a healthier lifestyle. Some mall merchants will have activities, discounts or door prizes related to the event.
Several public and charitable providers of health information and resources, including Worthington Libraries, Worthington Community Center/Parks & Recreation Department and the Healthy Worthington Food Pantry & Resource Center, also will provide information and assistance.
Door-prize drawings will be held for expo participants who visit a required amount of health exhibits and mall merchants in a scavenger-hunt fashion.
In addition to learning about their health and fitness levels, participants will be invited to sign up for the second annual 10-week community weight-loss challenge, overseen by nutrition experts at Rite for You Corporate Wellness, and to participate in Monday lunchtime mall-walking activities during those 10 weeks.
Rite for You, which provides nutrition and wellness services for individuals and corporations, has created a website for the weight-loss challenge.
Participants who register are provided weekly tips on exercise, fitness and diet and may consult confidentially with the firm's dietitians about customized meal plans and strategies.
Registration for the challenge will be available at the expo and for the following six days via email. The challenge begins Jan. 13. For a $5 donation to one of four local nonprofits, anyone may participate by entering his or her name and weight. The donations will go to the nonprofit with the team that achieves the highest percentage of weight loss.
"Designating local nonprofits as the teams for the weight-loss challenge added a spirit of friendly competition to the healthy results at last year's event," said Kathryn Paugh, chamber executive director. "It allows Worthington residents to show their support for the food pantry, the education foundation, the chamber or Leadership Worthington while doing something to benefit themselves, as well."
Paugh said the chamber received favorable feedback from the estimated 400 visitors to the expo last year.
"Residents thanked us for the variety of health information on nutrition, exercise, elder care and other topics and screenings for numerous health-risk factors," she said.
The expo is free and open to the public.
