Worthington: Identity theft results in another bogus tax return

Worthington police last week received another report of suspects stealing personal identification to file false federal tax returns.

The latest report came from a physician who lives in the 200 block of East New England Avenue.

He said other physicians in his practice have had the same experience.

He said when a tax preparer tried to file his return April 10, it was not accepted because someone else had filed a return in his name and a refund had been sent.

Worthington police have received several similar reports in recent weeks.

Someone also stole the personal information of a resident in the 600 block of Morning Street and used it to try to open a line of credit to purchase an iPad. The attempted theft occurred May 21.

In other Worthington police incident reports:

• On May 18 or 19, someone drove a golf cart over trash in the 200 block of West Riverglen Drive.

• A resident in the first block of East Stafford Avenue reported the theft of a garden hose from a nearby building between May 19 and 21.
