Teams fall short at sectional

The season ended in the Division I sectional round for the Worthington Kilbourne and Thomas Worthington high school girls tennis teams.

Kilbourne competed at Reynoldsburg and Thomas competed at Upper Arlington. The top four in singles and doubles in every sectional advanced to district Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, at Hilliard Davidson.

Kilbourne's Erica Chen won two matches before losing a district-qualifying match to Chillicothe's Taylor Sprouse 6-1, 6-0. Jenna Towslee lost in the second round and fourth-seeded Kelley Jiang lost in the first round.

In doubles, Elizabeth Borchers and Anna Zellar went 1-1, losing in the second round. Alex Malone and Tori Deibel had a first-round bye before losing in the second round.

Reaching district-qualifying matches for Thomas were the doubles teams of Elizabeth Chiu and Marriella Briones and Achinthya Sivalingam and Molly Maxwell.

Sivalingam and Maxwell went 2-1. They lost 6-0, 6-0 to Upper Arlington's Andi Smart and Beniva Ganther, who were seeded second.

Chiu and Briones had a first-round bye, beat Briggs' Lynise Morgan and Veena Phommarath 6-1, 6-2 and lost to fourth-seeded Emily Merickel and Elizabeth Sullivan of Gahanna 6-1, 7-6.

In singles, Kathy Zhang went 1-1, losing to top-seeded Sydney Power of Olentangy Liberty 6-0, 6-0. Essi Mignanou and Monica Chang lost in the first round.
