Thomas' Salmans reaches state golf tourney
Thomas Worthington High School’s Curtis Salmans has earned a spot at the Division I state golf tournament, which is Friday, Oct. 19, and Saturday, Oct. 20, at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.
Salmans shot a 1-over par 73 at the district tournament Oct. 9 at Apple Valley. Reynoldsburg’s Darnell Ellis shot a 74 as the top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced.
A four-player playoff was required to determine the final qualifier as Pickerington North’s Nick Montes and Scot Sapp, Olentangy’s Dylan Ahonen and UA’s Will Mason all shot 75.
Ahonen and Mason were eliminated after the first playoff hole and Sapp edged Montes on the second hole.
In the team competition, fourth-seeded New Albany shot a 298 as fifth-seeded Dublin Coffman (300) and second-seeded Dublin Jerome (306), the defending state champion, also advanced.
Top-seeded Pickerington North also shot a 306 but lost to Jerome on the fifth-score tiebreaker.
Jerome’s fifth score was an 81 by Brady Bohl, while North’s fifth score was an 85 by Zack Goodchild.
The Thomas girls team shot a 372 to finish sixth as the top two teams – Dublin Coffman (314) and Dublin Jerome (314) – earned the state berths.
Thomas, which has had a program since 1996 but made its only other district appearance in 2006, turned in a 372 to finish sixth.
Sydney Kelly led with an 88 followed by Ally Lucas (91), Claudia Podolski (94), Francie Zidonis (99) and Madison Morman (103).
“We shot better than we did at the sectional,” coach Sean Kaiser said. “I’m real happy.”
Watterson’s Erin Harper (73) and Natalie Myeres (74) gained the individual berths.
