The Worthington Kilbourne High School girls volleyball team's hopes for a Division I district championship remained alive entering this week, but Thomas Worthington's season came to end in the second round of the tournament.

Seeded 10th, Kilbourne swept through the first two rounds at home, defeating Upper Arlington 25-23, 25-16, 25-21 on Oct. 15 and Delaware 25-14, 25-22, 25-11 on Oct. 17. The Wolves entered a district semifinal against second-seeded Pickerington North on Oct. 23 at Big Walnut with an 18-6 record.

Haley Defibaugh had 51 assists, four aces and 23 digs in the two matches and Maria Calvert had 25 kills and 25 digs.

The semifinal winner will play fourth-seeded Olentangy Liberty or eighth-seeded Newark in a district final at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Big Walnut.

The district champion will play Chillicothe, Gahanna, Grove City, Westerville Central in a regional semifinal at 6 p.m. Nov. 1 at Hilliard Davidson.

Kilbourne was 0-2 against Central in OCC-Cardinal Division play, losing 25-20, 25-14, 25-21 on Aug. 30 and 25-16, 25-16, 25-10 on Sept. 25.

Thomas won its first-round match, defeating visiting Dublin Jerome 24-26, 25-14, 25-17, 26-28, 15-12 on Oct. 15, but lost at 12th-seeded Mount Vernon 25-22, 27-25, 25-19 in the second round Oct. 17.

The Cardinals finished 11-9 overall and 8-6 in the OCC-Central, behind Dublin Coffman (14-0), Olentangy Liberty (12-2) and Davidson (9-5) and ahead of UA (6-8), Marysville (4-10), Westland (2-12) and Central Crossing (1-13).
