Proxmire, relay reach district
Four individuals and one relay will represent the Worthington Christian High School swimming and diving program in the Division II district meet Friday, Feb. 15, at Ohio State.
The top two placers in each swimming event will automatically advance to the state meet Wednesday, Feb. 20, through Feb. 22 at Branin Natatorium in Canton. In addition, 16 at-large state berths will be awarded for each swimming event based on times statewide. The top boys diver and top three girls divers at district will advance to state.
In a sectional Feb. 9 at Columbus Academy, junior Luke Proxmire was fifth in the boys 50-yard freestyle (23.76 seconds) and sophomore Kameron Early placed seventh in the 50 free (24.48) as each advanced.
Early also moved on in the 100 backstroke after placing seventh (1:04.63) and Proxmire qualified for district after taking fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.13).
Junior Matt Watterson finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.13) to advance.
Also moving on for the boys were Early, Proxmire, Watterson and Grant Lawrence in the 200 free relay (sixth, 1:44.19) and 200 medley relay (fifth, 1:56.64).
Advancing to district for the girls team was freshman Becca Knapper, who was second in the 500 free (5:25.24) and fourth in the 200 free (2:01.76).
Boys basketball team gets sixth seed
The defending district-champion boys basketball team will open the Division III postseason at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at home against West Jefferson or Northridge.
The Warriors, who were 13-7 before playing Marysville on Feb. 12 and close the regular season Thursday, Feb. 14, against visiting Grove City Christian, are the sixth seed.
If Worthington Christian wins its tournament opener, it will play second-seeded Columbus Academy, Cardington or East Knox in a district semifinal at 6 p.m. March 5 at Delaware.
In a 57-43 loss to Hartley on Feb. 8, senior guard Addison Taylor scored 11 points and sophomore forward Johnny Wordlaw added 10. The Warriors led 17-16 after one quarter but were held to four second-quarter points and to eight in the third period.
Girls basketball team to open tourney
The girls basketball team begins its postseason at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, against visiting Wellington.
The Warriors, who are seeded second in Division IV, will play Millersport at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at a site to be determined if they win their tournament opener. The winner of that game will meet fifth-seeded Morral Ridgedale or Grove City Christian in a third-round game at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at a site to be determined.
If Worthington Christian reaches a district semifinal Feb. 28 at Lakewood, potential opponents include third-seeded Shekinah Christian and sixth-seeded Granville Christian.
Newark Catholic is the top seed.
The Warriors enter the tournament on a five-game winning streak. They closed the regular season with a 50-25 win over Marion Pleasant on Feb. 9, as Audrey Rettstatt had 15 points and Abbie Moss scored 10.
