The Worthington Christian High School boys basketball team survived its second-round Division III district tournament game against 10th-seeded West Jefferson on Feb. 27 to advance to a district semifinal.
The sixth-seeded Warriors won 41-40 to improve to 15-8 and advanced to face second-seeded Columbus Academy on March 5 at Delaware.
The winner plays fourth-seeded Fredericktown or eighth-seeded Ready in a district final at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
In second-round games Feb. 27, Ready upset fifth-seeded Grandview 45-42 to improve to 13-10 and Fredericktown defeated 14th-seeded Amanda-Clearcreek 40-33 to improve to 21-3.
Worthington Christian lost to Ready 49-34 on Jan. 5 but did not play Fredericktown during the regular season.
The district champion will face Dayton Stivers or Versailles in a regional semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Kettering Fairmont.
The Warriors won a district title last season.
Against West Jefferson, sophomore forward Johnny Wordlaw blocked a shot by forward Nick Mendenhall with seven seconds remaining to preserve the win. Sophomore forward John Routzahn led the Warriors with 12 points, with junior forward Seth Weygandt and junior guard Sam Condon adding nine and seven points, respectively. West Jefferson finished 18-6.
