Worthington Christian burned by hot-shooting Versailles in regional semi
KETTERING — The Worthington Christian High School boys basketball team fell behind by double digits midway through the opening quarter and never was able to recover as it lost 63-48 to Versailles in a Division III regional semifinal March 13 at Fairmont.
Versailles made six of its first seven shots, including its first five 3-point attempts during the first quarter and led 19-4 heading into the second quarter.
Worthington Christian pulled to within 25-17 with 3 minutes, 41 seconds left in the first half before Versailles expanded the lead back to double digits.
“You can’t win a game in the first quarter but you can lose it in the first quarter,” coach Kevin Weakley said. “They shot the ball well. Going 5-for-5 (from 3-point range) to start the game makes a difference.”
Worthington Christian finished 17-9 while Versailles improves to 21-5 and will play for a regional title March 16.
Sophomore forward Kyle Ahrens finished with 19 points and senior guard Chad Winner scored 15 points, all on 3-pointers, to lead Versailles.
Senior forward Nate Morris had 12 points and junior guard Sam Condon had 11 points for Worthington Christian, which lost in a regional semifinal for the second consecutive season.
