Kilbourne turning focus to postseason

Wednesday May 8, 2013 2:50 PM

The Worthington Kilbourne High School softball team was on the cusp of winning the OCC-Cardinal Division championship at the start of the week.

The Wolves now will turn their focus toward the postseason.

Kilbourne is seeded seventh of 42 teams in the Division I district tournament and has a first-round bye. It will play host to 19th-seeded Westerville North or 26th-seeded Newark in the second round May 16.

The second-round winner will play eighth-seeded Watterson, 18th-seeded Hilliard Davidson, 32nd-seeded Hilliard Darby or 41st-seeded Westland in a district semifinal May 21 at Pickerington North.

The district final is May 25 at Pickerington Central.

Kilbourne split a pair of games with Westerville North in OCC-Cardinal play. The Wolves were limited to three hits by Warriors pitcher Sammy Kilbane in a 1-0 loss on April 25, but they beat the Warriors 6-5 on May 6 to improve to 20-2 overall and 11-1 in the league.

Kilbourne, which concluded the regular season with league games May 7 against Darby and May 8 against Dublin Scioto on May 8, has not played Newark this season.

Before the win over Westerville North, the Wolves had posted five consecutive shutouts.

Sarah Adams allowed only one hit in a 2-0 win over Westerville South on April 30 and a 4-0 win over Dublin Jerome on May 3. Manda Cash pitched a four-hitter in a 4-0 win over Hilliard Bradley on May 1 and gave up only three hits in a 3-0 victory over Davidson on May 4. Also on May 4, Sydney Warinner tossed a two-hitter in a 5-0 win over Davidson.

Cardinals seeded 16th in district

Thomas is seeded 16th in the Division I district tournament and will play host to 34th-seeded Whetstone in the first round Tuesday, May 14.

Whetstone entered the week 16-7.

The winner will play at 13th-seeded Groveport or play host to 37th-seeded Watkins Memorial in the second round May 16. The second-round winner will play second-seeded Grove City, 26th-seeded Dublin Coffman or 31st-seeded Franklin Heights in a district semifinal May 21 at Pickerington North.

The district final is May 25 at Pickerington Central.

Thomas, which has yet to play Whetstone, Groveport or Watkins Memorial this season, fell to 9-10 overall and 5-5 in the OCC-Central with a 9-3 loss to Davidson on May 6.

The Cardinals had league games May 7 against Coffman and May 8 against Olentangy Liberty and will play host to Upper Arlington in a league game Thursday, May 9. They beat the Golden Bears 13-5 on April 8.

Thomas, which will play host to DeSales on Friday, May 10, must reschedule a league game against Coffman that was postponed April 29.
