After entering the Division III state track and field meet seeded last among the 16 competitors in the girls 100-meter hurdles, Worthington Christian High School freshman Christina Hemmingsen ended up finishing ahead of one runner during the preliminary races June 7 at Ohio State.
The top nine finishers from among the two heats advanced to the final June 8.
Hemmingsen placed 15th (16.64 seconds) after running in the second preliminary heat, which was won by Steubenville Catholic Central's Monica Rigaud (15.28). Edgerton's Cassie Flegal was last in the first heat and 16th overall (24.7).
Rigaud went on to place second (15.39) behind Warren JFK's Morgan Rice (14.81).
Hemmingsen ran a personal-best 16.223 to place fourth in the regional May 29 and 31 at Fairfield Union as the top four in each event advanced to state.
