Doubles teams reach district

By ThisWeek Community News  •

The Worthington Christian High School girls tennis team has advanced two doubles teams to the Division II district tournament after having one doubles team qualify a year ago.

The duos of senior Caroline Carpenter and sophomore Christina Hemmingsen and seniors Grace Harper and Brooke Hockenberry both advanced to district, which will be held Friday, Oct. 11, and Saturday, Oct. 12, at Columbus School for Girls, by finishing in the top four at sectional.

The two doubles teams won their first three matches in the CSG sectional held Oct. 3, 5 and 7 before losing in semifinal matches. They faced each other in the third-place match Oct. 7, with Carpenter and Hemmingsen winning 6-1, 7-5.

"It really is very exciting (to advance both doubles teams)," coach Midge Taylor said. "They were very consistent, they were serving well and they worked really well together as doubles teams. Hockenberry and Harper have played together all season. The other doubles team, Carpenter and Hemmingsen, just started playing together, and they're doing well."

Competing at sectional in singles were junior Andra Polsdorfer, who lost in the second round, and senior Maddie Tjoelker and junior Joy Pritchard, both of whom lost in the first round.

The top two finishers in singles and doubles at district will advance to state Oct. 18 at Ohio State and Oct. 19 at Hilliard Davidson.
