Wolves take win streak into district semifinal

The Worthington Kilbourne High School girls volleyball team takes an 11-match winning streak into its Division I district semifinal against sixth-seeded Westerville Central on Thursday, Oct. 24, at Bloom-Carroll.

The fifth-seeded Wolves defeated 41st-seeded Teays Valley 25-9, 25-19, 25-20 in the first round Oct. 14 and beat Watkins Memorial 25-21, 25-11, 25-13 in the second round Oct. 16 to improve to 20-4 overall.

Kilbourne, which is led by senior setter Haley Defibaugh, senior middle hitter Lydia DeWeese and senior outside hitter Sarah Freiheit, set a program record with its 20th victory. Its previous mark for wins in a season came in 2007, when it finished 19-6.

The semifinal winner will play fourth-seeded Grove City or 10th-seeded New Albany in a district final Saturday, Oct. 26, at Bloom-Carroll.

The Wolves did not face Westerville Central during the regular season, but they lost to Grove City 25-20, 25-19 in the Kilbourne Invitational on Sept. 14 and split two OCC-Capital Division matches with New Albany, losing 25-15, 25-22, 25-18 on Sept. 12 and winning 19-25, 26-24, 25-22, 21-25, 15-10 on Oct. 8.

The district champion will play in a regional semifinal Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Hilliard Davidson against DeSales, Central Crossing, Hilliard Darby and Olentangy Liberty. The regional final will be played Nov. 2 at Davidson.

The Wolves did not any of those four teams during the regular season. DeSales is the top seed in the district.

Kilbourne defeated Olentangy Orange 25-18, 25-12, 21-25, 25-9 in its OCC-Capital finale Oct. 10 to earn a share of the league championship with Olentangy. The Wolves and Braves both finished 12-2 in league play.

New Albany and Big Walnut tied for third in the league at 10-4, followed by Mount Vernon and Orange (both 5-9), Delaware (2-12) and Franklin Heights (0-14).

The Wolves' other league loss came against Big Walnut, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22 on Sept. 3. Kilbourne has not lost since Sept. 14, when it fell to Grove City and Frankfort Adena (11-25, 25-21, 25-21) while going 1-2 in its home tournament.

Cardinals fall in tourney opener

Thomas lost to 15th-seeded Gahanna 22-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-18 in the second round of the Division I district tournament Oct. 17 at home to finish 10-14 overall.

The Cardinals, who were seeded 16th and had a first-round bye, lost their final five matches.

The skid included OCC-Central matches against Davidson (25-12, 25-21, 25-15 on Oct. 8) and Liberty (25-18, 25-22, 25-14 on Oct. 10).

Thomas finished 6-8 in the OCC-Central to place fifth, behind Dublin Coffman (14-2), Davidson (12-2), Liberty (10-4) and Marysville (7-7) and ahead of Westland (5-9), Central Crossing (1-13) and Upper Arlington (1-13).

The Cardinals competed in Tourney for the Cure on Oct. 12 at Pickerington Central, losing to Lancaster 25-19, 25-20 and Bloom-Carroll 25-21, 25-18.
