Worthington Christian High School swimmers Becca Knapper and Matt Watterson felt motivated after the Division II district meet Feb. 14 at Ohio State.
For Knapper, a sophomore, improving on last season is the focus for her second state appearance.
Watterson, a senior who will compete at state for the first time, would like to improve on his district performance.
The state swimming preliminaries begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, and finals are 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Branin Natatorium in Canton.
Knapper is seeded 12th in the 200-yard freestyle after finishing fourth (1 minute, 55.33 seconds) at district. She is seeded seventh in the 500 free after placing second (5:10.51) at district.
Last season at state, Knapper finished 13th (5:16.54) in the 500 free and 22nd (1:59.42) in the 200 free.
"Last year coming into (state), I didn't know what the atmosphere would be like so I was kind of intimidated," she said.
"But this year I know what to expect. I'm excited for state and I'm excited to swim with the other girls."
Watterson finished sixth at district in the 100 butterfly (53.75) and secured the 20th seed for state. He also was sixth at district a year ago in the 100 fly, but didn't earn one of the 16 at-large qualifying berths.
"I thought it was a pretty good swim (at district)," he said.
"I went out pretty well, but almost all of my walls were pretty bad."
The girls team finished 16th (32) at district behind champion Columbus School for Girls (413) as 30 teams scored. The boys were 20th (24) behind champion Dover (259) as 41 teams scored.
