Press Club of Cleveland's 2007 Excellence in Journalism competition
ThisWeek won 15 awards in the news and editorial contest sponsored by the Press Club of Cleveland.
ThisWeek ranked the highest in the state in the number of awards won by Ohio community newspaper groups. In the previous year, ThisWeek won 11.
Once again, The Dublin Villager won a major award. The Villager was named the second-place winner in the Best Non-Daily Newspaper in Ohio category. One of the Cleveland-area Sun Newspapers, the Sun Courier, finished first. Last year, The Villager finished first.
ThisWeek's photography staff dominated the awards. Tim Norman won two first-place awards and one honorable mention award, which is the equivalent of finishing third. His first-place winners were for Sports Action -- Tackling Air, ThisWeek Westerville -- and for Sports Feature -- Title Hopes Drenched, ThisWeek Northland. His other award was for Spooktacular in The Dublin Villager.
David Rea singlehandedly swept the General Feature category, winning first, second and the only honorable mention. The winners were Peekaboo, ThisWeek Clintonville; First Day, ThisWeek Westerville; and All Ears, ThisWeek New Albany. Rea also finished second in the General News category for Fallen Marine, ThisWeek Westerville.
Chris Parker was second in the Photo Journalism category for his memorable Fireworks, ThisWeek New Albany.
Sports writer Don Delco was second in the non-daily Sports category for his piece, "Shot clock not ready to start ticking in Ohio," in ThisWeek Canal Winchester. The judges called it a "good local angle on national issue."
Lee Cochran's sports staff won the only honorable mention for Best Section: ThisWeek Hilliard.
Delaware reporter Nate Ellis won the only honorable mention for Community/Local Coverage for "Skate project moved back" in ThisWeek Delaware.
ThisWeek food critic and writer Gary Seman, who also reports on Northwest Columbus news, won for Reviews/Criticism in the Open Print category. His second-place award was for "McCormick & Schmick's in Easton still on its sea legs."
In the Infographics category, Erin Holl finished second for her Proposed Cobblestone Crossing Plans in ThisWeek Olentangy.
Jim Larrick won an award for Single Cartoon: Wendy's Layoffs in ThisWeek's Dublin Villager. Previously, Larrick has won first- and second-place awards in the contest.
