On Saturday afternoon, Principal Tim Donahue cut the ribbon on the new Franklin Heights High School on the West Side in front of scores of alumni and former staff members. Over the past three years, the district has rebuilt Franklin Heights and 13 elementary schools and renovated two other elementaries using $260 million in bonds and state construction money.

Time has not diminished devotion to students

Recently, I came across a 60-year-old kindergarten report card from the 1955-1956 school year. It was riddled with indicators that have come and gone, such as grading students for "keeping things out of their mouths" and "for the proper use of a handkerchief."

The new school year will begin Aug. 24 in the South-Western City School District with the official opening of buildings constructed in the final phase of the district's Ohio Facilities Construction Commission project.
