For the Columbus School for Girls cross country team, the season ended last Saturday in the Division II regional meet at Pickerington North.

The Unicorns finished 10th (273 points) behind champion St. Clairsville (29). Also qualifying for the state meet Saturday at Scioto Downs were Minerva (83), Granville (85) and Big Walnut (131).

Sophie Chatas paced the Unicorns, finishing 33rd in 22 minutes, 15 seconds. Also competing were Laura Staravecka (56th, 22:52), Bridget O'Donnell (85th, 23:56), Kelsey Klopfer (86th, 23:56), Miranda Butler-Petitt (93rd, 24:04), Taylor Lint (96th, 24:10) and Michaela McConnell (103rd, 24:24).

Individuals not on a qualifying team who finished in the top 16 advanced to state.

"I thought the girls did OK," coach Jack Guy said. "It was a pretty nasty day out there and they held their own. They held their position with where they were seeded, so I think they did fine."

CSG had advanced to regional by placing third (86) in the district 1 meet Oct. 24 at Watkins Memorial behind Granville (22) and Bexley (72). In the CCL meet Oct. 17, the Unicorns were second (63) behind DeSales (45) and ahead of Hartley (64), Watterson (83) and Ready (91).

CSG loses four seniors in Klopfer, McConnell, Emily Lau and Janie Staravecka. Among the runners expected to return are juniors Taylor LaFollette, Laura Staravecka, Lint and O'Donnell, sophomores Butler-Petitt and Chatas and freshman Katelyn Lennon.

"I think we had a good year," Guy said. "We had some good young runners come on the team and they did a terrific job. The juniors and seniors stepped up and did what they needed to do as well, so overall it was a good season. I think we've done just about everything we thought we could, and I think the girls are satisfied."

•The volleyball team concluded a difficult season when it lost to fourth-seeded Newark Catholic 25-4, 25-14, 25-11 in the first round of the Division III district tournament Oct. 21 to finish 0-19 overall.

"I think that was the best loss we had all season," coach Dave Mitchell said. "The girls played hard and we did the best we could. The first game wasn't so hot as far as what we could do, but we played well in the other two.

"We saw some of the lower seeded teams and our level of play was better than some of them. We saw some games in the tournament and the girls realized they could compete better than they had (during the regular season)."

CSG went 0-8 in the CCL to finish sixth behind Hartley (9-1), Ready (8-2), Watterson (6-3), DeSales (4-6) and Worthington Christian (1-9).

The Unicorns lose two seniors in Lily Burkhalter (outside hitter) and Maggie Wilson (outside hitter). Expected to return are juniors Jane Newland (defensive specialist/outside hitter), Rachel Pappa (middle hitter) and Elizabeth Simmons (outside hitter/middle hitter) and freshmen Carly Green (setter), Maddie McGregor (setter), Ellie Thompson (setter) and Emily Uselman (setter).

"I think the experience we gained this year is going to be tremendously beneficial, because we can pick up right where we left off," Mitchell said. "They understand the system, so now it's back to skill development.""

For the offseason, Mitchell is encouraging the players to get involved in club volleyball or spring and summer clinics.

"Next year is still going to be another building year," he said. "We only lose two seniors, but we expect to only gain two more players, so this is pretty much the team we'll have next year. We have to work on is, we have to improve our strength and speed in the offseason."
