Two events will mark Veterans Day in Delaware County.

The annual Veterans Day parade will step off on South Sandusky Street near Ohio Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8.

The parade route will run north on Sandusky to Pennsylvania Avenue and end at the Delaware County Fairgrounds.

This year's parade theme is "If You Enjoy Your Freedom, Thank a Veteran." Prior to the start of the parade, area Scout troops will pass out more than 2,600 American flags to spectators.

At 8:30 a.m. on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, the new Veterans Memorial Garden at the Center for Older Adults on Cheshire Road will be dedicated.

Ceremonies will be both inside and outside the building, said spokesperson Donna Meyer. In the event of inclement weather it will be moved entirely indoors.

The memorial garden is at the front of the building, next to the flagpole.

The flagpole originally was erected at the east side of the building when the center opened, but was moved to the north entrance soon after when that became the main entrance, she said.

Some veterans, who also are members of the senior activity center, joined in the plans to move the flagpole to a landscaped area on the oval island at the main entrance. Those discussions also focused on what else might be included, Meyer said.

The group decided to incorporate a memorial garden complete with benches and engraved bricks, she said. Money raised from the sale of the bricks will go toward building projects at the center.

The Raymond B. Austin American Legion Post 115 of Delaware offered to fund the installation of the memorial garden as a monument to all who have served or are serving in the military, Meyer said.

All of the bricks purchased for $80 each prior to Sept. 25 were installed in time for the dedication ceremony, which is open to the public, Meyer said.
