Although the opening ceremony for the Grounds of Remembrance was held more than a month ago, construction work continues at Dublin's first veterans memorial.

Final construction projects, including the path that runs along the dedication stones, should wrap up next month.

The material that will be used for the path had to undergo testing before it was installed, parks and open space director Fred Hahn said. The testing wasn't complete in time for the dedication May 25.

"We could not get this material in time for the ceremony, so we placed loose aggregate that did not have a binding agent in it," he said. "We did it just to have the project open and have the ceremony."

Rainfall since the dedication has caused the path to erode, but the erosion will be cut significantly once the path is finished, Hahn said.

"Some of the washout has settled into the engraving (of the dedication stones)," he said. "Once we complete construction that will become minimal and it will be regular maintenance of the site to clean those out."

Although construction is expected to be completed in August, Hahn said the placement of dedication stones will continue as they are sold.

There are currently 50 stones that need to be installed during the final construction.

"Depending on the rate of sale in the future, we will be going down there periodically and replacing those through the years," Hahn said.

In related news, Dublin City Council has yet to discuss what will be done with items placed in the memorial wall in the Grounds of Remembrance.

At a July1 council meeting, council member Michael Keenan said a few items already have been placed at the wall. He wasn't sure if the city should make a copy of the items, archive the items or just leave them there.

"If someone leaves a World War II medal there, what do we do with it?" Keenan asked fellow council members.

Council directed city staff to look at what other communities do with memory walls and the items left there to honor veterans.

Council plans to discuss the issue at its Aug. 3 meeting.
