Gahanna Christian Academy girls volleyball coach Nate Kirk entered the season hoping his team could finish with a winning record.
The Eagles appear ready to meet that goal, improving to 6-3 after beating Mount Vernon Academy 25-9, 25-6, 25-6 last Monday. "The team is coming along quite well," Kirk said. "We have some inexperienced people, some younger players and those are the ones I knew we would be struggling with, but they are coming along. They are learning." Gahanna Christian was 0-2 in the MOCAL before playing Grove City Christian last Tuesday. The Eagles play host to Delaware Christian today in a league match. "Delaware Christian is a decent team," Kirk said. "They're somewhere in the middle (of the MOCAL). We should match up pretty well with Delaware and hopefully beat them. We beat them last year, and I hope we can do it again this year." Gahanna Christian opened MOCAL play with a 25-18, 25-17, 18-25, 25-20 loss to Tree of Life on Sept. 1 and lost to league favorite Madison Christian 25-19, 25-14, 25-19 on Sept. 8. "Madison Christian is going to be at the top of the league," Kirk said. "They're the best in the league again. We're going to have to really play well to beat them. We upset them last year. I hope we can do the same again this year. "We definitely want to come back against Tree. We did not play well that night and I hope we come back and beat Tree the next time we meet them (Sept. 24)." Through seven matches, Alissa Kirk led the team in kills with 98, followed by Deborah Tadesse with 39. Kirk led the team with 74 digs and Sara Kirk had a team-high 32 aces. "I'm very happy with the team," Tadesse said. "I really like our team a lot. We work together really well. We're using each other more this year. It's not like one person is the best. We all have a specific part that we need to play and do." "We have to continue working on being effective with our hits," coach Kirk said. "We're getting pretty decent passes and sets, but we're not putting the ball away." •The soccer team is hoping to build on its first win. Gahanna Christian, which was 1-5 overall before playing Mount Vernon Academy last Monday, defeated Liberty Christian 6-1 last Friday. The game was tied at 1 at halftime, but the Eagles scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take control. Cody Thomas scored two goals and Miles Coffmon, Keegan Parsons, Kinsey Propst and Kwaku Sefa each scored one. Thomas led the team with five goals through six games. "It is tough when you start a season 0-5, but we feel that with this first win it will propel us though the rest of the season," coach Brandon McCoy said. "Our first goal is try to get our record back to 5-5. The second goal is to win our remaining four league games. "We have made this season a little more challenging on ourselves by starting slow, but this is a tough and talented team. I believe there is still a good opportunity of finishing the regular season with 10 wins." The Eagles were 0-1 in the MOCAL before playing Grove City Christian last Tuesday.
