The Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff Historical Society will be adding a new feature to its Web site next week.

"Grandview Reminiscences" will feature personal anecdotes and memories of growing up and living in Grandview and Marble Cliff during the community's early years from the personal memoirs, letters or interviews of residents.

"People will be able to click on the link on our homepage and read the documents, which range from letters of a few paragraphs to memoirs that are 30 or 40 pages long," said Tom DeMaria of the historical society.

DeMaria and historical society member Wayne Carlson will add the reminiscence of another resident each month to the archive.

Each month's subject will be spotlighted in the Moment in Time feature the pair put together for ThisWeek.

"We'll have a photo of the person and a short write up about them in Moment in Time and provide the link to the reminiscence page," DeMaria said.

"When you go to the reminiscence page, you'll be able to read the letter or memoir by that person and view other photos or information relating to them," Carlson said.

"It will be nice to be able to publish something that's a little more in-depth and complete than we can with Moment in Time," he said.

Many of the memoirs were written around the time of the nation's Bicentennial, when the newly-formed historical society asked residents to provide their memories of the early years of the community, DeMaria said.

"I would guess we have about 30 to 40 of these," he said. "We thought that they weren't doing any good just being 'kept in a drawer.'

"What I find intriguing about them is that you really get such a great sense of community and how everybody watched out for each other and took care of each other," DeMaria said.

The debut reminiscence will feature memories of the 1910s and 1920s by Laura Walcutt Karns. She will be the subject of the Moment in Time feature in the Dec. 10 edition of ThisWeek.

The Walcutt family owned a home on Goodale Boulevard and owned several strips of land in the community, DeMaria said.

Laura Walcutt Karns tells about the great flood of 1913 and how her high school class of 1919 did not hold a graduation ceremony due to a Spanish Influenza epidemic, he said. Her high school sweetheart and future husband, Ralph, enlisted in the army during World War I before he graduated.

The reminiscence page will be added to the historical society's Web page next week and readers will be able to go there to find out more about Karns and read her memoir, Carlson said.

The Web site address is www.ghmchs.org.

The idea for the feature resulted after the positive reaction to the "Early Grandview Reminiscences" program DeMaria presented last year at the Grandview Heights Public Library.

"We got such a great turnout and people really seemed interested in hearing about the pioneers from the early years of the community," DeMaria said.
