Hilliard will be well represented Saturday in the Division I state cross country meet at Scioto Downs.

But none of the three schools are sending a team to compete.

The Hilliard Davidson High School boys cross country team failed to qualify as a team for the first time since 1999 after finishing second (120 points) to Mason (100) a year ago in the state meet.

The Wildcats were 12th with 242 points last Saturday in the regional at Pickerington North.

The state meet will feature the top four teams and top 16 individuals from regional meets held at North, Tiffin Columbian, Troy and Youngstown Boardman

Host North (75) won its region and was followed by Reynoldsburg (118), New Albany (139) and Dublin Coffman (147).

Davidson qualified its top two runners in Kenta Shimizu and Nathan Moore, both of whom said last Saturday that it's going to feel a lot different this year without the whole pack.

"I'm excited to go," said Shimizu, who was eighth (17 minutes, 34.51 seconds) as North's Daniel Garleb (17:04.64) won. "I wish my team was there with me. It happens I guess, but my goal is to get all-Ohio. I was 34th last year. I only have nine more spots. I think I can definitely make it."

Shimizu will be making his third trip to state. He was 127th (17:21.92) as Davidson's sixth finisher in 2007 and last year improved to 34th (16:17.03) as the No. 2 runner. Mason's Zach Wills won the race last year in 15:15.66, and he is a favorite to win again.

The top 25 earn all-Ohio status.

Moore was 15th (17:43.95) last Saturday. At state last year, he was 88th (16:52.81) as Davidson's sixth runner.

"It's going to be harder (competing without the team)," Moore said. "I'll be a lot more nervous. There's more pressure."

Darby's Jay McKenna will make his fourth appearance at state after finishing seventh (17:32.17) last Saturday. This is the second time McKenna is going to compete without the help of a team. The Panthers qualified as a team last year and in McKenna's freshman year. When he was a sophomore, he advanced, along with teammate Joe Jackson.

His best finish at state was last year when he was 31st (16:14.95).

"When we do the pre-race cheer, it's quite a bit quieter," McKenna said of competing at state without a team. "It's a lot more fun with the team because you have your buddies there at the start of the race and you have people to run with. You feel like you're running for more than just yourself when your team is there."

Defending champion Mason was second (98) to Cincinnati St. Xavier (48) in the regional meet at Troy last Saturday. Other regional champions competing Saturday are Hudson, which won the Youngstown regional and Sylvania Northview, which won at Tiffin.

Helping Darby finish seventh (183) last Saturday was Andrew Lowery, who was 45th (18:31.08) and followed by Eric Mescher (49th, 18:38.42), Denton Thompson (59th, 18:46.99), Landon Erb (63rd, 18:48.35) and Don Bennett (73rd, 18:59.18).

Davidson's other finishers were Elliot Moore (81st, 19:07.04), Ryan Caulley (87th, 19:18.12), Steven Boyd (92nd, 19:25.27), Kyle Dilahunt (107th, 19:51.18) and Mark Gillespie (124th, 21:01.68).

Bradley was 14th (322) last Saturday. Austin Alpeter (38th, 18:24.64), Troy Kelleher (44th, 18:30.42), Jacob Markusic (93rd, 19:26.75), Nick Petikas (96th, 19:34.72), Ahmed Dualeh (105th, 19:47.62), Michael McDunn (118th, 20:28.17) and Marlon Dodds (119th, 20:29.02) competed.

Jessica Hoover is Hilliard's lone representative on the girls side. She was third (19:54.62) last Saturday behind champion Meredith Wagner (19:22.57) of Sylvania Northview and Allison Stillwell (19:48.39) of Dresden Tri-Valley.

Hoover was 58th last year as Cincinnati Oak Hills' Brooklyne Ridder won (17:51.36).

"I just remember thinking this is such a fast pace," Hoover said of competing at the state meet. "I remember not knowing what to expect to get into it. I remember it wasn't a course that every (sets a personal record on). That experience having been there is definitely going to help."

Rocky River Magnificat is a heavy favorite to repeat as champion after scoring 68 points to last season when North Canton Hoover (121) was runner-up.

As a team, Davidson was sixth (178) last Saturday. Northview (61), Dublin Scioto (71), Toledo Notre Dame (111) and Canal Winchester (131) advanced.

Also competing for the Wildcats were Lauren Hoover (29th, 21:21.38), Carrie Kuder (45th, 21:41.68), Eleanor Rogers (81st, 22:51.82), Claire Lieburn (96th, 23:22.95) and Danielle Trisel (97th, 23:24.6).

Darby was 13th (340). Shannon Kelleher led the Panthers (28th, 21:19.41) and was followed by Taylor Baldridge (65th, 22:24.12), Natalie Lissey (79th, 22:50.49), Nickie Tock (101, 23:40.69), Dawnyae Simpkins (106th, 24:04.33), Liz Bookhamer (107th, 24:09.96) and Jodi Mescher (108th, 24:13.49).

Bradley was 13th (304) in the Division II meet as St. Clairsville won (29). Competing for the Jaguars were Lauren McCabe (32nd, 22:12.17), Alex Winter (64th, 23:05.6), Rebecca Nikolaus (74th, 23:27.33), Alisha Mackintosh (94th, 24:09.71) and Madison Hammerberg (121st, 29:07.84).
