A record season for the Hilliard Davidson High School boys lacrosse team came to an end May 26 when it lost to Thomas Worthington 7-5 in a Division I South-Central Region semifinal.

The Wildcats finished 19-3 overall, shattering the previous program record for wins set in 1994 when they went 12-4 and matched last season when they finished 12-8. They also had the least number of losses in program history.

"It's been amazing, but it's not just been a one-year thing. It's been a work in progress," third-year coach Jason Godwin said. "This year I think we sort of overshot some of our goals, but we had a stellar season, a memorable season at that."

Davidson tied Dublin Jerome and Worthington Kilbourne for second in the OCC-Buckeye Division at 4-2, behind Upper Arlington (5-1) and ahead of Dublin Coffman (2-4), Thomas (2-4) and Dublin Scioto (0-6).

Attacker Sky Strahler was named All-American as well as first-team all-league and all-region. Others earning honors were defender Pat Dougherty (first-team all-region, second-team all-league), goalkeeper Adam Lewis (first-team all-region, second-team all-league), attacker Drew Morrison (second-team all-region, second-team all-league), attacker Danny Winland (honorable mention all-region, honorable mention all-league) and midfielder Casey Topp (honorable mention all-region).

The Wildcats lose 10 seniors, including Dougherty, Strahler and Winland.

"These guys have been awesome," Godwin said of the seniors. "They were the guys we looked toward to lead our team and they did a really good job for our team. They brought the right attitude. It was a special year for those guys."

Expected to return are juniors Lewis, Morrison, Topp, Matt Arthur (midfielder), Cory Davis (defender), J.D. Detmer (midfielder), Chris Evans (midfielder), Derek Hohn (midfielder), Charlie Lantz (midfielder), Chase Tefend (attacker), Walker Tice (defender) and Cody Topp (midfielder) and sophomore Matt Kausel (midfielder).

"Since I got here, we tried to create a new attitude," Godwin said. "We've been choosing to win and doing what it takes to win on the lacrosse field. We have great support here. We've been taking what else has been successful at Hilliard Davidson and trying to put it on the lacrosse field."

•The Davidson girls team finished 6-11 overall after falling to top-seeded Upper Arlington 16-1 in a Division I South-Central Region semifinal May 24.

The Wildcats beat Watterson 13-10 in the first round May 19.

Davidson was seventh in the OCC-Buckeye at 1-5, behind UA (7-0), Kilbourne (6-1), Thomas (4-2-1), Coffman (3-3-1), Darby (3-4) and Jerome (2-4).

Scioto (0-7) was last. The game between Davidson and Jerome on April 20 was canceled because no officials were available.

The Wildcats lose four seniors in Erin Hamilton (midfielder), Stephanie Katona (defender), Carly LaRosa (attacker), and Kali Snyder (attacker).

"Each one of the seniors contributed a significant amount both on and off the field," coach Mark Buroff said. "Erin Hamilton was a phenomenal role model for the girls when it came to leading practices and she is a perfect example of what a student-athlete is all about.

"Kali Snyder was the quarterback of the offense and any success we had would not have happened without her. Carly LaRosa, in addition to scoring goals, was an excellent team leader and could really motivate the kids. Stephanie Katona might have made the biggest sacrifice, going from attack to defense, but she always was a defensive presence for us."

Expected to return are juniors Becca Carter (attacker), Lisa Castiglione (defender), Seanae Corvi (attacker), Dani Elefritz (midfielder), Aubrey Gilliland (defender), Courtney Hilfiger (defender), Elizabeth Lease (goalkeeper), Jenny Pachuta (midfielder), Tory Peitz (midfielder), Kelsey Sicker (midfielder), Alyssa Villacres (defender) and Ellie White (attacker) and freshman Maire Austin (goalkeeper).

"The group coming back is solid," Buroff said. "We're going to have the core of our defense back, including goalie and two or three midfielders and half of our attack. The problem is that they are all juniors who are going to be seniors, and that's not the balance I would like to have, but the lion's share of the starters will be seniors."

•The Darby boys team finished 2-15 overall after losing to Westerville Central 10-1 in the play-in round of the Division I South-Central Region tournament May 20.

The Panthers finished 1-5 in the OCC-Ohio to tie Bradley for sixth, behind New Albany (6-0), Olentangy Liberty (5-1), Olentangy (4-2), Gahanna (2-4) and Olentangy Orange (2-4).

Darby loses five seniors in Lance Cordova (midfielder), Brandon Friedley (defender), Tyler Smetanko (midfielder), Jeff Smith (goalkeeper) and Corbin Wolfe (attacker).

"The seniors wanted to wipe the slate clean from years past," coach Rob Schmeling said. "They did a great job of directing and leading the younger kids and really did a great job for us all year."

Wolfe led the team with 43 points and attacker Spencer Kocher had 22 points despite missing the final five games. Attacker Alex Ghilani had 11 points and midfielder Jacob Hooker added 10.

"We lost quite a few players to various injuries, so we're looking forward to getting everyone back and healthy," Schmeling said. "We were able to get tons of varsity experience for a lot of guys and at times we were down to 20 or 21 players, so a handful of freshman also got varsity experience."

Expected to return are juniors Ryan Belcher (midfielder), Nick Belli (defender), Sam Fisher (attacker), Ghilani, Jeremy Hawthorne (defender), James Holt (defender), Harrison Kitts (defender), Kocher and Scott Mitchell (midfielder), sophomores Don Bennett (midfielder), Nick Cory (defender), Kirby Dearth (midfielder), David Jordan (defender), Cody Klein (defender), Kocher, Cameron Leach (midfielder), Toren Moore (attacker) and Gabe Quinones (defender) and freshmen Tyler Dixon (goalkeeper), Alex Martin (defender) and Jacob Wende (midfielder).

•The Bradley girls team finished 2-15 overall after losing to Columbus School for Girls 18-9 in the first round of the Division II Central Region tournament on May 20.

The Jaguars finished eighth in the OCC-Ohio at 1-7, behind New Albany (8-0), Orange (7-1), Westerville North (6-2), Liberty (5-3), Olentangy (4-4), Pickerington North (3-5) and Westerville South (2-6) and ahead of Westerville Central (0-8).

Being a first-year school, Bradley did not have a senior class. In addition, the Jaguars had only one junior in attacker Lauren Biller.

"I think the kids really look to Lauren and she was a good job as their captain this year," coach Becky Mottlow said. "I think a lot of them never let the season record get them down. They were realistic about our goals. We set goals before every game and worked to accomplish those. That was more important than wins and losses."

Expected to return are sophomores Rachel Baileys (attacker), Vendala Clark (attacker), Caitlyn Cote (defender), Rachel Dicken (defender), Lauren Harris (attacker), Sara Holloway (defender), Marianne Ickes (attacker), Amber Pharazyn (defender), Alex Schell (goalkeeper), Sydney VanHoose (defender) and Makayla Vidosh (defender) and freshmen Amanda Capriato (goalkeeper), Kwynn Herr (midfielder), Hannah Jasper (attacker), Paige McKenzie (defender), MacKenzie Mignery (midfielder), Sam Minnich (defender), Jessica Raines (midfielder), Mariah Sayre (midfielder), Kirsten Tindal (midfielder) and Nicole Tindal (attacker).

"Next year, we will be further ahead from the start," Mottlow said. "We can be more advanced and focus on different things instead of starting with fundamentals."
