A small group attended the Appleton, Bennington-Liberty Schools reunion last month at the Appleton United Methodist Church.

Raymond Hewett led the group with "School Days," traditionally accompanied on the piano each year by Kathleen Miles-Boone, who was ill and unable to attend.

Esther Horn-Jay, 96, was the oldest student attending. She was given a floral arrangement from the garden of Gloria Parsons-Runyon. She remembers teacher Lola Van Fossen bringing kids to school in a horse-drawn wagon and her sister Jean rode in a covered buggy. Esther attended school at Dutch Cross Road School on Dutch Cross Road.

Charlene Eder-Householder, Erma Jean Conard-Horn, Gerald Conard and Gordon Saunders attended Green Bush School on U.S. 62.

Thirteen attended Bennington-Liberty School: Otto Smith, Leland Hubbell, Mary Chalfant-Wittman, Gene Leggett, Sonny Plott, Janice Plott-Smith, Janet Plott-Forest, Teresa Patton-Fuller, Raymond Hewett, Pauline Ashbrook-Rine, Brenda Drury-Conard, Thelma Houck-Hardy and Jane Smith-Vanderhorst.

Anita Saunders-Wonders, Jane Smith-Vanderhorst, Janice Plott-Smith and Janet Plott-Smith also attended Bennington-Northridge.

Delmar Warner, longtime bus driver, celebrated his 90th birthday this year. He moved to the Dennis Rice place and walked for four years to Cooper Road to go to school.

Gordon Saunders also was a longtime bus driver for Alexandria and Homer Schools. More school bus drivers were added to last year's list: Burton Ashbrook, Bob Patton, Gordon Saunders, Pearl and Carlos Hatfield, Fred Baughman, Allen Hatch, Leila Gutridge and Bob Edwards.

Otto Smith came from Columbus with his niece, Jane Smith-Vanderhorst. She is the daughter of Wilbur Smith. Otto's sister was teacher Viola Smith. After he graduated, he became a vo ag teacher. He still has property near Appleton.

Deceased members were Jean Moreland-Noble and Gertrude Melick-Medler.

Officers for next year will be: Leland Hubbell, president; Raymond Hewett, vice president; Thelma Houck-Hardy, secretary; and Velma Myers-Hewett, treasurer. The reunion will be held the fourth Sunday in September.
