The elevator at the Richwood Community Apartments and Civic Center was back in service this week, according to Union County commissioner Charles Hall.

Suzanne Patterson, director of the Civic Center, said on Sept. 10 that the elevator in the four-story building was closed as a safety precaution in late June.

Although the elevator was workable this week, Patterson said, that it would officially reopen on Sept. 15 after the inspection is completed.

Closure of the elevator resulted in some residents of the apartment complex, constructed in 1972, to seek temporary shelter elsewhere. Some residents on the fourth floor were moved to the lower levels of the apartment building, Patterson said

The fire department trained a team of high school- and college-age youths to work during the summer to get people up and down the stairs. After the students have returned to school, members of the Future Farmers of America from North Union High School have been trained to carry on the task, Patterson said.
