October has been a busy month for the volunteers at the Care Train of Union County as applications for holiday assistance have begun pouring into the local charity.

To date, applications from 111 families with 257 children age 12 and under and 51 children between the ages of 12 and 17 have been reviewed, according to Care Train Executive Team member Jim Cesa.

An additional 72 senior citizens and 31 adults with developmental disabilities have also asked for assistance during the holidays.

"While families in need are coming in on a regular basis we are anticipating an increase as the awareness that the holidays are almost upon us is realized," Cesa said.

Application forms can be found and downloaded on the Care Train Web site, www.caretrain.org. The deadline for submitting an application is Nov. 20.

Community members and businesses can help the Care Train by adopting a family or holding a toy drive. During November and December, toy drop off barrels will be located at several locations throughout Union County, including: McAuliffe's ACE Hardware, Kroger, Starbucks, Donatos, Burger King, Big Lots, Curves, Richwood Police Department, Plain City, Jerome and Marysville fire departments, Boston's, Marysville and Raymond libraries, State Street Performing Arts Center and Buckeye Chiropractic.

The Care Train Auction, to be broadcast live by Time Warner Cable, will be held at McAuliffe's Ace Hardware on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Dan Westlake will serve as auctioneer for the live auction and community celebrities will assist with answering the phone calls from bidders. An updated list of auction items can be found on the Care Train web site. The list changes regularly as items are received from the community.

"in addition to collecting toys, the Care Train is grateful for any contributions we receive and we are also accepting auction donations," said Pam Klaus, Care Train's executive director.
