The last time the Marysville High School girls soccer team practiced a shootout was during two-a-days last August. Last Thursday, the Monarchs' Division I district tournament fate came down to the team's final shooter.

Thomas Worthington's Kristen Taylor missed her team's fifth shot and the game rested on the foot of Marysville's Kylee Tuchfarber. If she scored, Marysville would win, but her attempt went wide left.

There wasn't another shootout, though.

"The keeper came off the line," Marysville coach Joe McSwords said. "It's OK for a keeper to move side to side, but they can't step forward or that's encroachment on the kick and you get a do-over."

Tuchfarber made the most of the do-over.

"I was happy to hear I got another chance," she said. "I knew I had to sink it and I went to the opposite corner."

Tuchfarber scored giving Marysville a 4-3 shootout win. Marysville plays at top-seeded Upper Arlington on Tuesday in a district semifinal.

"This is a huge, huge boost," McSwords said. "These ladies helped me put this program on the map the last four years. To make it to a (district semifinal) in that fashion is great.

"We'd never gone to overtime, never gone to double overtime and never gone to a shootout. I told the girls this is why we do those shuttle runs or practice when it's cold and raining outside."

Marysville's season continues Tuesday with the state's fifth-ranked Upper Arlington team. The Golden Bears have a 15-game unbeaten streak that began Sept. 1 with a 5-0 win over Thomas. Michela Paradiso leads UA with 21 goals.

"This is the second season and we're not giving up," McSwords said. "We are one of the best teams Marysville has ever produced. We won (last Thursday's) game because of the girls' hard work."

The winner advances to play DeSales or Westerville Central in a district final Saturday at Wellington. Both teams are 11-4-2 overall entering Tuesday's game.

•The football team's season finale is Friday at home against Dublin Scioto.

Last season, Marysville notched its third win in 14 meetings against Dublin Scioto, a program that opened in 1995. The Monarchs beat the Irish 13-10. Nathan Weeks rushed for 115 yards on 27 carries and one touchdown.

Scioto fell to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the OCC-Cardinal Division as the Irish came up an extra-point short in the 14-13 loss at Liberty on Oct. 16. Three of Scioto's five losses have been by a touchdown or less.

Scioto, which played Dublin Jerome last Friday, was looking to avoid a losing season after finishing 5-5 last year and 6-4 in 2007.

To make matters worse, Scioto lost its leading rusher and top tackler, Alex Gordon, for the season with an ACL injury on Oct. 9

"You're measured by your wins and losses, but I've been very proud of how our kids have handled the season," Scioto coach Karl Johnson said. "When you put together the list of adversities, it's been a year like no other. But this group has shown lots of character."

Meanwhile, Marysville is looking to salvage a lost sea-son. Before last Friday, the Monarchs allowed 91 points in their last two games as they were 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the OCC-Cardinal.

"We've been beat up in the secondary," coach Jeff Gafford said. "We had five safeties get hurt and three are out for the year. We've been piecing together our secondary and we allowed eight plays over 25 yards. Our goal is to have none. Part of that is injures and we also didn't tackle well or missed coverages."

Through eight games, Weeks led Marysville with 798 yards and nine touchdowns on 141 carries.
