Kim Renninger, owner of Kimberly's Diamond Corner, is celebrating 20 years of business in Powell.
For 20 years, the one-story red-brick building at the "four corners" in Powell has brought sparkle to the city. The jewelry store, Kimberly's Diamond Corner, 1 N. Liberty St., first opened its doors to customers on Nov. 10, 1989. Owner Kim Renninger said she and her husband, Ralph, drove through Powell one day and "fell in love with the area." They decided to move the jewelry business and their residence to Powell. "I like it because it's a small town," Kim Renninger said. "I'm never going to leave my building. I love it and I feel really safe here." The store specializes in bridal rings and diamonds and is known for its large selection, Renninger said. "We have over 300 diamond rings in stock. If we don't have what you want, we can find it for you or have it made," Renninger said. "We also have a really big selection of everyday jewelry and hundreds of naturally colored gems." When the economy caused the price of gold to increase, Renninger said she decided to increase the store's selection of sterling silver jewelry, which is less expensive than gold. "We have add-a-bead bracelets, gems in sterling silver -- like jasper and quartz -- and heavy quadruple-strand necklaces that are very popular now," she said. Renninger is a Gemological Institute of America gemologist with 24 years' experience. Her business grew out of her passion, she said. "Growing up in Detroit, Mom was an antique dealer and Dad repaired clocks," she said. "I used to go pick up clock parts and a jeweler's store was next to the parts store. I always came back with little 14-carat gold trinkets. I fell in love with jewelry." Her passion grew from home-party sales, foundation fundraising for hospital guilds and a store in Tiffin to the current store on Liberty Street. Her husband recommended she turn her passion into a business. "The owner, the gemologist, is the one waiting on you," Renninger said. "Each person coming in gets one-on-one attention from a specialist. ... There's a lot more to know about a diamond than the four C's that make it sparkle -- color, cut, carat and clarity." The store's staff can also make, repair and design jewelry. "If a stone is chipped, I have a stone cutter that can re-cut it to fix it," she said. Renninger said she is "really proud of being in Powell for 20 years" and welcomes the efforts the city makes to help its small businesses. "The sidewalks that were put in are really nice," she said. "There's so much to offer with all the businesses in downtown Powell, the owner-operated businesses. There are a lot of educated and qualified business owners here." The store's hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call (614) 436-4653. Story toolsToday’s Top Stories
