The Etna Township trustees Nov. 5 appointed trustee-elect John Carlisle to serve out the rest of Paul George's term this year until Jan. 1.

George died Oct. 1, after putting up campaign signs. He was seeking re-election Nov. 3 to another four-year term,

Carlisle and Randy Foor were chosen Nov. 3 to fill the two available trustee seats.

While this is Foor's first time as a trustee, Carlisle previously served on the board from 1988 to 1995.

Carlisle, 52, has lived in Etna Township for 30 years. A mechanical contractor by trade, Carlisle said he decided to run for the seat in November because he thought his expertise was needed.

"I've always enjoyed public service and went into it back then I think then 25 or 26 percent of the township roads were still gravel," Carlisle said. "I vowed that they would all be paved my first term as trustee and ended up paving them again my second term."

Carlisle said his knowledge of Etna Township and his prior eight years of experience as a trustee will make him a good trustee for the next four years.

"The history of Etna Township, where we were, where we presently are and where we're headed I believe you have to have a pretty good balance," he said.

Carlisle also served six years on the Licking County Planning Commission, two as chairman, and served on the Four County Solid Waste Advisory Council for Licking, Fairfield, Muskingum and Knox counties.

In addition, he has served on the Licking County Health Department one year and on the West Licking Fire District's board for two years.

Carlisle said Paul George was a neighbor and a friend who lived four doors away from him.

The unofficial final results from the Licking County Board of Elections showed township residents gave Carlisle the most votes on Nov. 3 with 1,393, while Foor came in second with 1,240 votes.

They beat out Pamela Munce (875 votes), Charles Hagy Sr. (873 votes), Trent Stepp (646 votes) and David Weber (538 votes).

Carlisle and Foor will replace trustees Dick Knapp, who did not run for re-election, and George.
