Organizers of the 2010 Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival have lined up several acts for the August event but say they still need volunteers to help put on the summer celebration. Mary Hudson, president of Reynoldsburg Festivals Inc. announced last week they have landed the popular local rock band The Danger Brothers as the headline act. This year's festival will once again be held in Huber Park on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 20 and 21. Back for a second year will be 2009 Reynoldsburg High School graduate and country singer Ashley Everts, who will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20. The Danger Brothers will rock the stage Saturday, Aug. 21, also beginning at 8 p.m. The Mount Carmel Fitness Challenge will be held Saturday morning and will include a 5K, a 10K, and a half-marathon of rollerblading. Registration opens at 8 a.m. with the actual events starting at 9 a.m. Reynoldsburg's Got Talent is scheduled to return this year, as well. It's tentatively scheduled for Saturday afternoon, although an exact time has not been chosen. Last year's Tomato Festival attracted about 5,000 people; about 150 volunteers helped out, Hudson said. So far, organizers have a core group of about 25 volunteers preparing for this year's Tomato Festival, but Hudson said more will be needed by the time opening day comes along. "We absolutely need volunteers and although admission and parking is free, we need help with the parking because we have lots to be managed so people aren't parking all over the place," she said. The Tomato Festival will expand this year with two large tents for arts and crafts, a rest and relaxation area, bingo, games of chance and more activities for kids and teens, she said. Hudson said young ladies from Reynoldsburg who want to participate in the Tomato Festival Queens Pageant and the Princess Pageant should register by going to the festival's Web site at www.reynoldsburgtomatofestival.org. "All of the forms for signing up for everything, for food and business vendors, arts and crafts, and the pageant, are on our Web site," she said. "People need to start planning for it and jump on board." Vendors at this year's Tomato Festival will be required to hook up with a nonprofit organization such as civic organizations and area churches, Hudson said. "If a vendor wants to come in and sell cheddar burgers, they have to hook up with, let's say, the Reynoldsburg Helping Hands and will have to sponsor and give a portion of their proceeds to them," she said. She said the cost for an arts and crafts booth is $125. Business and food vendor booths cost $75 for a civic organization, $200 for all others. The deadline to reserve space is Friday, Aug. 13. Forms for renting space are available on the festival's Web site. Hudson said the form should be printed out, filled out and mailed -- with a check to cover the fees -- to Reynoldsburg Festivals Inc., P.O. Box 197, Reynoldsburg, Ohio 43068. In addition, Hudson said Heartland Bank is the main presenting sponsor for this year's festival but more sponsors are welcome. Those interested should call her at (614) 866-4888 or go to the Web site for more information. Story toolsToday’s Top Stories
