The Big Walnut school district's new elementary school has a name: General Rosecrans Elementary.

Maj. Gen. William Starke Rosecrans, born near Sunbury in 1819, was a high-ranking Union general during the Civil War.

The board of education made it official based on the recommendation of superintendent Steve Mazzi at the Oct. 12 meeting.

A recent community survey asked questions including what the new school should be named. General Rosecrans Elementary was the most popular suggestion, Mazzi said.

"Like probably Hylen Souders Elementary, no one says 'Hey, I'm going to Hylen Souders.' They just say 'I'm going out to Souders.' Most people will probably say 'I'm going to Rosecrans Elementary," Mazzi said.

Kevin Caudill from Turner Construction gave an update on the construction of the new elementary school at the meeting.

Turner serves as the owner's representative for the project. It serves as a liaison between the owner of the building and all other parties involved in the construction, school officials have said.

"The masonry is complete with interior and exterior bearing masonry and they are now working on interior walls," he said. "The veneer on the outside of the building is beginning to go up and we should see a lot of progress here in the coming month."

Structural steel on the site is nearly complete, he said. "A metal roof deck is beginning to go on the building. The south side of the building is now enclosed with a metal roof."

The decking for both the gymnasium and the commons is to follow, Caudill said.

"The general contractor on the job continues to pour slabs. É So we're getting hard surfaces to work off of, which is going to allow a lot of these other contractors to get out there and complete some of their stuff as the roof is completed as well," he said.

Robertson Construction Services, Newark, is the general contractor.

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing contractors are on site and "working very well with the masons and the other contractors as well to complete their (work)," he added.

Work on the new middle school is also under way, Caudill said.

"We actually started stripping topsoil today," Caudill said on Oct. 17. "Tomorrow, we will be bringing in some of the stones to start some of the road work."
