Genoa Township has two new trustees.

Rick Carfagna and Karl Gebhardt were elected on Nov. 3, defeating incumbent Gerry Cotter and challenger Larry King. Current trustee David Engleson declined to seek re-election.

Carfagna led the race with 4,786 votes. Gebhardt earned 2,775 votes, narrowly defeating Cotter, with 2,528 votes. King received 1,287 votes, according to unofficial results from the Delaware County Board of Elections.

"We assumed from the beginning it was going to be a crowded field. That's why we got our campaign started in the early spring," Carfagna said. "We wanted to have everything in order by mid-summer, so that we could focus on our efforts on meeting as many residents as possible during the final three months.

"It's been a very long, hard seven months, so this is an incredibly humbling moment for me and my family. I want the voters to know that I take this responsibility very seriously and I plan to do my best to work with residents and keep our community moving in the right direction," he added.

Carfagna has lived in the township since 2002. He worked as a page at the Ohio House of Representatives in college. He later served the Legislative Service Commission as a legislative aide in the House.

For the past seven years, he has worked for Time Warner Cable as a government affairs manager, serving as a company liaison to more than 400 local governments in the state.

Gebhardt said, "It was a good race. We had four good candidates and I think we all ran a very positive campaign. I'm just very blessed and very thankful for the support and I look forward to continuing to make Genoa, which is a very good place to live, even better.

"I look forward to working with the trustees and the staff and look forward to involving a lot of people in the township," Gebhardt added.

He has been involved in government work and public affairs for 37 years in counties and townships around the state. These duties include land use planning, economic development and recreation.

Gebhardt said he also has been involved with the Clean Ohio program and helping counties and townships put together plan proposals for Clean Ohio funding.

The Clean Ohio Fund originally was approved by voters in 2000 with a $400-million bond program. It is designed to protect Ohio's natural and urban areas through preserving green space and farmland, according to its official Web site, www.clean.ohio. gov.

Also at the polls, local liquor options were approved at Sunbury Mills Plaza, state Route 3, beer, wine, mixed beverages and liquor, Sunday sales; CVS Pharmacy, state Route 3, beer, wine, mixed beverages; Revco Discount Drug Centers, 111 W. Cherry St., Sunday sales.
